After a lot of time thinking, researching and a few months waiting on Mummy and Daddy Hedgehog to work their magic my little pet hedgehog has been born. Meet Milo, the new addition to my family who will be arriving on my doorstep in a months time! These photos were taken by the breeder at 6 days old, and then 2 weeks old.
Milo is an african pygmy hedgehog, which is much different from your average wild hedgehog - he doesn't carry fleas for starters! They're quite an odd choice of pet, and probably not the cuddliest but they're such interesting little animals... and cute too!
African pygmy hedgehogs eat a diet of dried cat food, mealworms (yes, live worms - I'm still not sure how I will deal with that!) as a treat and also bits and pieces from our own foods such as mince and vegetables. They live in a large cage and love to run in a wheel, covering up to 6 miles per night sometimes. They can be grumpy little critters and they do roll themselves into a prickly little ball if they're scared, but other than that they don't hurt to touch.
I'm getting my hedgehog from a breeder in Edinburgh, and he's costing me £150. A pet hedgehog requires a lot of care and isn't just something to rush into. I've done a lot of research and found the Pygmy Hogs UK website a great help if you're considering a pet hedgehog.
No doubt Milo will be a regular guest on my blog once he arrives so you'll be seeing his little face again soon!
Oh my gosh - too adorable! Can't wait to see lots of pictures of Milo once he arrives <3

Wow, I never thought of hedgehogs as pets! What are they like as pets - are they friendly? Can you have him poodle round your flat like a house rabbit?

DeleteThey can be quite grumpy sometimes I think, but are generally friendly once they get to know you. They'd probably chew wires and get lost in my house but I'm going to get a little pen for him to run around in :) x
DeleteCongrats!! Hedgehogs are really cute! I don't think thy're allowed as pets in the U.S. though.
ReplyDeleteI love hedgehogs, they are so intriguing. I never knew you could have them as pets until I saw Becky's from MilkBubbleTea, so cute. Xxx

That is SO cute! My friend rescued a hedgehog once, but it was all flea-ridden... These are so adorable though, so jealous! My dog would definitely eat them though.... xo
ReplyDeleteSo cute!!! I have honestly never heard of hedgehog breeders or hedgehogs as pets! haha!! And buy a pair of tweezers for the meal worms, that's how I used to feed my friend's gecko haha! But be careful because if you leave them in the box for too long they turn into moths (not nice when you open the box in your bedroom) so if you hear them fluttering around in the box, I'd recommend taking it outside and opening it away from your face hahaha!!

Oh god that is terrifying about the mealworms - I hate moths! x
DeleteAwww so cute. I'd never heard of hedgehogs as pets either, what a great idea.
