A building lost to time

People Make Glasgow.

At least this is what the 200ft sign attached to the face of this historic Glasgow building said. It's not that I disagree, people really do make Glasgow. But I have a love for the architecture that fills our city too, the old and the new, and the history that each building holds. What some people might view as an eyesore - masked from view by the aforementioned bright pink sign - I see as a thousand untold stories.

First built in the 1800s, and rebuilt just thirteen years later after a devastating fire, this was once a lively factory employing over three hundred people. When we visited it was abandoned, after closing in 2001, with crumbling staircases and walls covered with graffiti. And today, only a few months later, all that's left is rubble.

It was still daylight when we arrived, but despite this the atmosphere was eerie with nothing but the sound of water dripping from leaky pipes and concrete and broken glass crunching noisily under our feet as we walked. The first floor, easy accessible, was littered with broken bottles and empty cans of spray-paint. We weren't the first to visit. To the left there was a small ladder, conveniently propped against a partly-crumbled wall which we carefully climbed to enter the second floor.

Here it was darker, a long corridor with barely any light. We heard footsteps that didn't belong to us and from the darkness appeared three other people; two men and a lady. They were urban explorers too, here to be one of the last to step foot inside this building and catch a glimpse at what used to be. They were from Romania, Spain and England, building their friendship around a shared love of abandoned places. We stood and spoke for a while, our voices echoing as we shared knowledge of other forgotten places to visit before parting ways.

As we made our way upwards, we were met with level after level of emptiness. What was once filled with machinery, making up to 2000 of Britian's favourite chocolate biscuit every hour, was now a concrete expanse. It was hard to imagine people at work here, the sound of laughter around the conveyer belts. Where were those people now? What twists and turns did their life take after being made redundant?

As we made our way back down something caught my eye; a small green plant had pushed it's way through a crack in the concrete. It was the only sign of life left this in building. Everything else had been long forgotten.

On where I've been hiding...

Some of you might have noticed that my little corner of the internet has been quiet recently. I've had a rather long case of bloggers-block and although I've been busy doing some pretty damn cool things, I just haven't felt the urge to sit down and write about them. I've spent less time behind a screen and more time living in the moment, spending time with the people who matter to me most and working towards my goals. Although, ummm you could say technically that last one actually does put me behind the screen for longer... But more on that later!

So where have I been?

One of my New Years resolution for 2016 was to 'Live the Adventure' and as cliché as it sounds, I really have been living the adventure. I've seen more of Scotland and the Highlands in the past year than I have before and nothing makes me happier than hopping in my car, travel-mug of coffee by my side, and spending the day exploring new places. Sometimes there's a plan, other times I like to see where the road takes me.

I've been to more castles than I can count, driven through a mountain pass which took me from sea level to the snowy peak of a mountain and back down a twisting helter-skelter road to discover a herd of Highland Cows blocking the path. I've been camping, I've been glamping (in a Nordik kata!) and I've made Peanut Butter Oreo s'mores under the most breathtaking night sky.

I've grown as a person and I've really kicked ass when it comes to achieving my goals. I've taken on a few social media clients who I adore working for. Although I'm still doing this on-top of my 9-5 job, which is pretty tiring, it's extremely rewarding and so satisfying to be doing something I love, by myself.

Happiness and positivity are two things I've really worked on too and I'm happier than I have been in years. I've been saying "yes!" more often, and not letting the little things worry me. I've been embracing my independence and enjoying my own company.

And as you can see from above, I've met someone pretty special to share all of these adventures with. I've always been unlucky in love (and could probably write a book about my experiences...!) but I've finally found someone who lives life at the same pace as me, pushes himself to achieve things and inspires me to do the same, he just gets me.... and will also spend a long time posing at the base of a mountain with me until we get the perfect photo. Ha!

So there you have it, my life update. Now to spend some time dusting the cobwebs off of my blog....

BOOHOO & VILLAGE HOTEL: TREAT YOURSELF

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of a spa day. Nothing relaxes me more than spending the day being pampered and having a leisurely dip in the jacuzzi with a good book waiting on my lounger by the side of the pool. As far as Glasgow goes, I've tried just about every spa so I was excited when I was given the opportunity to try out the new kid on the block Village Hotels.

WATERMELON SWIMSUIT + TROPICAL BIKINI + PALM TREE SWIMSUIT

The lovely ladies at Boohoo invited me along for an evening of pampering and treated me to some new swimwear to mark the occasion. I was spoilt for choice, as I scrolled through pages and pages of swimsuits and bikinis on their website. There really is something for everyone and I opted for an eye-catching swimsuit with palm trees on (pictured above). The fit was perfect and I couldn't wait to wear it!

After arriving at the spa, everyone got changed into their new swimwear and after plenty of admiration over how pretty each piece was, we headed straight for the spa. The spa is bright and modern, with a large heated pool in the middle. After some girly chit-chat, a visit to the steam room and sauna followed by a quick lie down by the poolside loungers we headed to a treatment room for some fizz and nibbles and a special skincare workshop from one of the therapists from the Village Spa.

After sharing her skincare secrets and teaching us how to give a facial it was getting late and it was soon time to head home to bed. My skin was glowing and I was so relaxed that I felt like I was floating on a cloud. It didn't take me long to fall asleep! Zzzz...

SOCIAL & COCKTAIL: COCKTAILS & CABARET

I was recently invited for a night of cocktails and cabaret with Social and Cocktail, a company offering cocktail making classes for birthdays, hen parties, engagements, housewarmings and more. Long time readers might recognise the name Social and Cocktail from this blog post that I shared a few years ago when the Social and Cocktail team visited my apartment and served cocktails to my guests all night long from their well stocked bar. The cocktails were fantastic (I still talk about their Toblerone Martini to anyone who will listen!) and I was excited to see what they'd come up with for their new 2017 Cocktail Menu.

Their venue of choice was The Riding Room, a cabaret bar situated in Glasgow's Merchant City. I'd visited The Riding Room with friends before and enjoyed a few of their quirky cocktails (served from an old silver kettle no less!) and knew it would be the perfect venue for the night ahead.

There were performances from three acts to keep us entertained while the Social and Cocktail team worked hard behind the bar mixing up our drinks. We were treated to some pinup cabaret from the talented Alana Wilson and some very unexpected burlesque from Kim Khaos and Tom Harlow. I'd never watched burlesque before and both acts were incredible in their own way.

Although I did blush a little at some parts, especially as we were seated directly infront of the stage!

The menu:
Disco Drumstick
Blueberry Sour
Pomegranate Mojito
Strawberry & Vanilla Daiquiri
Strawberry Woo Woo

As I had anticipated, the cocktails did not disappoint. Between the two of us, we tried every cocktail on the menu and loved the Pomegranate Mojito so much that we went back for more... more than once! It was the perfect mixed of sweet and tarte and very easy to drink. My other favourite was the Disco Drumstick. Being a lover of all things sweet, this was the first cocktail I tried on the night and it tasted exactly like my childhood favourite Drumstick lolly. They even served a large Drumstick lolly in the drink, perfect to swirl around the cocktail and infuse it with even more flavour.

We had a brilliant night, and I'm already thinking of an excuse to throw a party and invite the Social and Cocktail team back to my apartment!
