BYRON, GLASGOW: CALVIN HAGGIS BURGER

Available in Scottish Byron restaurants from 23rd – 29th January 2017

I think I can speak for most of Scotland when I say that the addition of haggis to an already popular menu item is a sure fire way to get people excited. Ok, so the ingredients of haggis aren't something you want to spend much time thinking about (if you're not already aware then Google at your own risk...!) but there's just something about the spicy, peppery taste that I love and when I received an email from BYRON about their exclusive new burger - the Calvin Haggis - then I just knew I had to try it.

The Calvin Haggis features a 6oz hamburger, haggis, bacon and onion relish, a classic tattie scone, American cheese, dry cure bacon, fried egg and blanched white onions, all finished off with a dollop of Byron sauce and sandwiched between a soft glazed bun. Isn't that a mouthful and a half?! At first I was skeptical. With so much going on I struggled to believe that the flavours would all work together.

But in Byron I trust and they didn't let me down.

The burger had actually won Byron's annual 'Bunnovator' competition, which challenges staff to create an exciting new burger innovation, and one bite in to my burger I could see why. The flavours complimented each other perfectly. From the crispy smoked bacon to the gooey American cheese that had made it's way onto the peppery haggis. The roll was soft, but firm enough to hold everything together and prevent it falling apart in your hands. The egg on top was perfectly runny and made for a great dip for the sweet potato fries I'd ordered as a side. Hayley, the Bryon waitress who created the burger, did Scotland (and Byron!) proud.

My only complaint is that it's available for one week only, to celebrate Burns Day, so if you want to try it out for yourself then you'd better be fast!
