I was quite dubious about trying out this product from Lush. Having never strayed away from tubes of minty fresh toothpaste I wasn't sure how much I'd like my toothpaste in tablet form and more importantly, how clean it would leave my mouth. As much as I love products from Lush I wasn't sure I was ready to put the condition of my pearly whites in their hands! However, they have been trialled by a group of people who have had regular check ups with dentists and actually noticed an improvement in their oral hygiene (as seen in this video) which was reassuring enough for me to buy them.
To use toothy tabs you put one tab in your mouth and crumble it using your front teeth. It will then start to foam up (not as much as regular toothpaste does) and you simply brush your teeth as normal, spit and rinse.
Toothy tabs come in 6 different flavours, I chose to try out Sparkle first which Lush claims will make your teeth sparkle brightly. The flavour of this toothy tab is vanilla with added black pepper for a 'radiating warmth' after you've finished brushing. The vanilla is very faint and hard to taste at all. I got quite a shock when using this product for the first time because I'm so used to the minty sensation that toothpaste usually has and this doesn't deliver it at all. Not that I expected it to, but it was strange not to have minty fresh breath. I found the pepper to be quite nippy and too overpowering for me (but I am a wimp when it comes to spices!) and actually put the box of toothy tabs to the back of my cupboard and forgot about them until 2 weeks ago.
I've now been using Sparkle twice a day for 2 weeks for the purpose of this review and can I say I've noticed a difference in the brightness of my teeth? No, not really. I have got used to the sensation and do enjoy using them. My mouth feels clean after brushing, but my teeth don't look brighter or cleaner than they usually do.
I don't think toothy tabs are for everyone. They're certainly a new experience and I'd say they're worth trying if you're curious. Although I'd still like to try some of the other flavours, they're probably not something I'd use all the time which is a shame because I do really like the fact that the packaging is 100% recyclable. What I do like about them is that they're great for travelling. They take up very little space and there's no worrying about your toothpaste tube bursting in your case and getting all over your clothes.
Have you tried toothy tabs yet? Do you think you'd like to, or does the thought of them not being like your usual minty toothpaste put you off?
i have to say, when i saw these on one of the first pages of the lush magazine i was a little sceptical too! haven't tried them, but not sure at all if i wanted to. i found using strawberry toothpaste too weird, hahah!

I don't know if I'll try the Toothy Tabs if I'm honest! Crunching a tab in my mouth would feel less clean than before? I love how innovative Lush are with their products though! xx
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered what these are when I've seen them in lush so I'm glad you've done this review so now I know! I hadn't realised they were toothpaste! x
ReplyDeleteI tried Ultrablast I think, it was disgusting I have to say I definitely think I'd prefer Dirty because that's minty and herbally! I've never found anything that's whitened my teeth (I think it's all such a scam! with any brand!)
ReplyDeleteI did see these in the shop and the shop assistant showed me how to use them and if I'm honest I was put off by 2 factors, 1 being the taste (Ultra blast) it was just vile! 2 was the price, £2.75 is fairly expensive and I go to lush for a "luxury treat" and tooth paste just doesn't fall in to that category for me. X
ReplyDeleteHmm don't think these are really my cup of tea either. There is definetly something nice about brushing your teeth and having that nice fresh clean feeling!xx
ReplyDeleteWow that's a really weird product... I don't think I can do without the lovely minty-ness of my Colgate and Listerine! lol
ReplyDeleteFeels like some kind of product your grandparents would tell you they had to use "in their day" because there was no other option! lol

Hmmm, there's something about the lack of minty freshness that I just wouldn't be able to get over I think. So I think you did well to give them a proper go for the review! Jen x

I have a feeling I'll be buying a few of these to take on holidays with me, but I don't think you can replace a good old minty clean :) Thanks for the review! xxx
ReplyDeleteI ALMOST bought these, but at the last minute I backed out, I guess I'm not ready to give up my minty fresh breath just yet.

Great review, I don't think I could use them. Seems alien xx
ReplyDeleteDitto Gem above, really enjoyed reading this, but similarly don't think I could stray from paste now... I think using it twice a day for 21 years has made it more habit than choice! I'd probs have to use toothpaste after using these anyway, just to make them feel clean x
ReplyDeleteI have never ever seen anything like this! Defiantly one to try out then! x
ReplyDeleteNothing could replace good old Sensodyne for me, so I'll be giving these a miss. I'm so obsessive about dental care that I won't use any product that's not from a trusted dental company, so you won't find me chewing on tabs from a company famed for its bath products any time soon!
ReplyDeleteReally interesting review, but I don't think I could handle anything other than mint - I just automatically associate that with clean. And the crumbling it with my teeth seems a bit tablet esque?

Great review, I have always looked at these in the shop. Never been sure what to make of them. I don't think this is a lush product that I will be trying.

Its one product from lush that i have never fancied trying x
ReplyDeleteNot sure these appeal to me, can't imagine not using toothpaste! x
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of these, it sounds... interesting?! looking forward to the review as i really want to try a new tooth whitening product x
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I have heard about them but this is a great review! I can't imagine not having minty fresh breath after brushing either! They do sound interesting though, I will probably give them a go!

Not sure about these, I love the minty-ness of toothpaste too much! Great review x
ReplyDeleteSounds like Lush should have done some market research before they brought these out, haven't heard anyone say they want to try them! I don't like the idea at all; like Jetleyface said I go to Lush for some yummy smelling treats to perk me up after a long day, not for toothpaste!

I dislike the sensation of crunching these, I don't know why, and I miss the minty freshness you usually get. Just one lush thing I just can't get on with.
ReplyDeleteI've yet to try anything from Lush, everything seems to smell a little too strongly for me lol! They do look interesting, but I think I'd find it weird without the minty fresh feeling, like I hadn't even bothered brushing!

Wow! Theyre so strange! I dont think id like them very much- although I am curious. Its amazing the things they come up with!
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing a review! I've always wondered what they are! Please check my blog out at...

I bought some toothy tabs on a student lockdown shopping night and my review is near enough yours. Not a complete waste of time but I think where oral hygiene is concerned I'm staying with the non-natural chemicals. x
ReplyDeleteoooo how odd! I'm not sure i could get away with the smell of vanilla and black pepper on my breath! i like the minty freshness too much!! Do they make a minty one? Your suggestion about using them to take away on hol is a good one! I am the curious type so might have to try

I use sparkle toothy tabs every day. I've started to notice a difference in my teeth (white-wise). I only use a half a tab though, as the foam so much even a half a one foams out my mouth!
ReplyDeleteI just might like Toothy tabs better than my guitar tabs!
ReplyDeleteI'll be sure to give this a shot, it seems like it's easy to use.
